Eero Saarinen’s Pedestal Table

One of the BEST furniture finds for me EVER was my Knoll Saarinen Table. Today they are ever so popular but back when I found mine….so many moons ago….at all places GOODWILL...the cashier thought I was CRAZY to pay $20.00 for that ugly table!!

I was ecstatic and still to this day LOVE-LOVE -LOVE my table!

I have been offered many times more than what I paid for my table over the years by collectors but I will never sell, the story is too good and the table has moved with me too many times to ever think of giving it up.

Here a few pictures from design sources incorporating the timeless table….wonder where they got theirs?

The son of architect and Cranbrook Academy of Art director Eliel Saarinen and his wife, textile artist Loja, Eero Saarinen studied sculpture in Paris and architecture at Yale before working on furniture design with Norman Bel Geddes and practicing architecture with his father. He collaborated on several projects in furniture design with his friend, Cranbrook alumnus Charles Eames, and opened his own practice in Bloomfield Hills in 1950. Among the many buildings for which he is known are the Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, and the TWA Terminal at Kennedy International Airport in New York. He was the recipient of numerous awards and the subject of many exhibitions.

This is a mock up photograph I did in my studio about 8 years ago, the photographer and I were playing with ideas and we dragged the table out from under the girls working on it to shoot it.

I have much better chairs now!! I had to buy Knoll of course!

ASID Florida North Design Competition

Thanks to ASID Carolina’s Chapter who were the judges for the 2009 ASID Florida North Chapter Interior Design Competition.

Last Saturday night I received a first place award in the Renovation Category for a remodel of a condominium on Jupiter Island, Florida.

The design and renovation of this ocean front condominium was influenced by the owners request for a blue and white, comfortable yet elegant retreat. Throughout the project the main task was to simplify and brighten the interior to embrace the beautiful views.

In Our Current Issue

For our cover feature, architect Andrew Kirschner, interior designer Jill Shevlin, landscape architect Warren McCormick and builder Toby Hill joined forces for an oceanfront house in the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club in Vero Beach. In addition to attaining an elegant, British West Indies aesthetic sought by their clients, the design team collaborated to assure the homeowners a livable house as well. To that end, a large courtyard at the front elevation houses the pool and outdoor entertainment areas providing refuge on windy days. Inside, interiors are reflective of an Old World elegance and yet casual enough for beach loving children and grandchildren.

The chair back is cut from a single piece of plantation mahogany and finished in a walnut stain, while the feet are accented with brushed nickel.

When Glenn Midnet lost his mother, Alyce, to breast cancer in 1974, he was just a boy. Inspired by his mother’s courage and quiet grace, Midnet grew up to become a successful designer of interiors and furniture, and the owner and CEO of Design Group West.

Now, Midnet is giving back with Furniture for the Cure, a design studio that is donating 10 percent of its proceeds to cancer research. Its first chair, appropriately named Alyce, has been produced by The Platt Collections and can be seen at the manufacturer’s showroom during the High Point Market in North Carolina from October 17-24, which also coincides with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The cause’s signature awareness ribbon is incorporated into the chair’s design as a back cut from a single piece of plantation mahogany finished in walnut stain. The chair’s feet are covered in brushed nickel and upholstery options include pink Dupioni silk, platinum and pearl metallic fabric, or COM.

Which One of These Is NOT Like the Others?

This is my “Where’s Waldo” blog…..

Can you tell from the before pictures below which model is different from the others? One hint….It’s a pricey difference!!!

Look Harder……I’ll give you another hint….it’s White…..and all have them but one.

OK I’ll tell. Top Right. NO BUILT INS!!

Every model came with built in bookcases flanking the fireplace EXCEPTone! MINE! The Sanderling Model. Built in’s are an option with the floor plan, however my model did not come with any. I was left with two massive 6 foot wide niches .

Soooo…. what’s a designer to do????

As I’ve mentioned before part of being a great designer involves so much more than placing furniture. It requires creative thinking and problem solving. Simply buying and placing furniture is decorating. Add draperies and still you’re just decorating….solving problems, being creative, that is what a true Interior Designer does.

Stay tuned to see the full story and Daily Drama of the Sanderling Model Floating Shelves…..Solving the problem (remember our BUDGET??) was only the first part of the battle….Next there was fabrication, delivery, installation, unsupervised due to circumstances beyond my control, and then an unhappy designer (me) who was determined to get what she wants…and fianlly a finished project…sleepless nights no more!
